Matsubayashi-Ryu

The art of Matsubayashi-Ryu is a subsystem of Shorin-Ryu, one of the major styles of Okinawan Karate-Do. Founded in 1947 by Shoshin Nagamine (1907-1997), it is a culmination of his lifetime of study with such revered teachers as Ankichi Arakaki, Chotoku Kyan and Choki Motobu, among others.

Our traditional curriculum includes the 18 kata (Fukyugata 1-2, Pinan 1-5, Naihanchi 1-3, Ananku, Wankan, Rohai, Wanshu, Passai, Gojushiho, Chinto, Kusanku) and seven yakusoku kumite handed down by Nagamine Sensei, and is firmly grounded in basics.

Although Nagamine Sensei also held ranks in both Judo and Kendo, he dedicated his life's work to the study and propagation of Karate-Do, for which he was awarded the Fifth Class Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese Government in 1988.
